Boarding: Termly Reflection

At the start of the year, the boarders enjoyed plenty of time outdoors, embracing the activities that make Clifton the vibrant and spirited home it is. From lively rugby games between our Grade 6 boarder girls and boys to the growing interest from girls joining cricket sessions, the fields have been full of energy, laughter and teamwork. Our adaptable war cries, often echoing proudly from Usher House and Sutcliffe House before lights out, have become a joyful soundtrack to these evenings.

Boarders have also taken full advantage of the Expressive Arts Centre, where many continue to grow in their music skills, exploring instruments, practising vocals and building confidence in their creativity. For others, the slow, tradition-rich walk to the Equestrian Centre has become a weekly highlight. There, they enjoy one of Clifton’s most unique offerings, learning discipline, connection and care through horse riding.

As the weather has turned rather moody, the girls and boys have shifted much of their fun into the Indoor Centre and boarding houses. It is in these shared spaces that the heart of communal living truly shows itself. Whether they disappear into the pages of a favourite novel, enjoy a competitive game of tree cricket, football or marbles in the unique style passed down through generations, or head out for a bike ride on the track, the sense of togetherness has never been stronger. Even with the occasional rivalry, everything is held firmly in the spirit of camaraderie and fun.

Outside of structured activities, boarders have enjoyed memorable weekends at the Angela Sacco Lapha, filled with laughter, warm fires, hot chocolate and the legendary late-night stories of the mysterious Goatman, which somehow become more dramatic every term. A definite highlight was the raft-building competition, where teams worked together to create floating masterpieces or, in some cases, sinking surprises all in the spirit of teamwork and problem solving. Our younger boarders also delighted in crab fishing, with our Grade 4s and one enthusiastic Grade 3 proudly arranging for the species team to cook their catch. Their spirited attempt to sell horseradish to the kitchen was inventive and amusing, even if it was never going to make it onto a plate.

Many boarders also had the wonderful opportunity to attend the Hilton Arts Festival, broadening their creative horizons and celebrating the arts with real enthusiasm.

This year has been a remarkable journey of emotional, social and personal growth. The bonds between peers and staff have deepened through shared joy, challenges and the simple everyday moments that make boarding life meaningful.

As we approach the final stretch of the term, the boarding community continues to enjoy our key traditions. Earlier in the year, we shared a beautiful Valentine’s Dinner, and this week we hosted our much-loved Boarders’ Christmas Dinner. We were honoured to be joined by Mr and Mrs Fleischack as we shared memories of early homesickness, first-day nerves, unexpected challenges and the humorous moments that shape every boarding journey. It remains one of the most cherished evenings on our calendar.

The true challenge of boarding is discovering oneself, learning to navigate both triumphs and struggles, and collecting each experience as part of one’s “backpack for life”. The journey is not a race. When you rush, you miss the small but important moments. The more you engage with others, the more you begin to understand yourself, and perhaps that is the very heart of boarding.

Ourr traditional grub nights are always the highlight at the end of the term, when boarders enjoy the last of their tuck before facing the unavoidable task of packing trunk bags, an undertaking that often seems far too big for children. Their final chapter ends with a celebratory jump into the school pool, followed by final hugs, heartfelt goodbyes and the tears that come when friendships for life take a temporary pause. It is a proud and emotional moment, marking the close of one journey and the start of another.

As the Christmas holidays approach and the year draws to a close, we extend our warmest wishes to all our boarding families. May this festive season be filled with peace, joy and precious time with loved ones.
