TK-5th grade artists have begun their WMAES garden inspired print making units! Here are kindergarten pop art apples and 1st grade monarch butterfly prints! Kindergarten was so surprised by the magic of turning on the black lights to make their art glow! Everyone is excited to hang these in our enchanted garden art show this year!
All students read the Peter Reynolds & Susan Verde book, I Am Human. We reflected on empathy, kindness, taking ownership of our actions, and growing positively together. Then each student chose their favorite color to paint their Peter Reynolds inspired self portrait on our collaborative mural.
Students TK-5th grade harvested plants to dye yarn this September! They've studied color theory and deeply appreciated all of the beautiful colors nature has given us! Looking forward to weaving with our newly dyed yarn this fall! We found a colorful beetle that inspires us to make glowing bug art for our enchanted garden art show this year!
We invite families to join a Nature Walk & Talk to learn more about our tuition-free GSRP preschool program.

We’re looking forward to one of our favorite annual community events, Treats on the Trail. Treats on the Trail provides a fun, safe trick-or-treating experience for families on the beautiful trails at WMAES. Donations of bags of individually wrapped candy in support of the event are greatly appreciated. Candy donations can be dropped off in either the elementary or secondary office.
Families can begin entering the trails at 5:00. Costumes for students are encouraged but not required. Costumes must be appropriate for school (e.g. no weapons, blood, etc.). We encourage families to bring a bag or bucket for each child that will be receiving candy. We hope you’ll join us for this fun family event!

All students at WMAES continue to receive free breakfast and lunch through the Community Eligibility Provision (CEP), and we’re proud to share that this will remain in place for the 2025–2026 school year—even though the future of state funding for the Michigan Meals Program remains uncertain beyond September 30.
Our team is committed to making sure that every student has access to nutritious meals each day. That’s why, regardless of state-level decisions, WMAES will use other funding sources to ensure free meals continue next year.
✅ Why we still need your help:
Even though meals are free, completing the Education Benefits Form is critical. This form helps WMAES qualify for important funding that supports educational programs, staffing, classroom resources, and student services.
📝 How to complete the form:
Click here to print and complete the Education Benefits Form (2025–2026)
OR complete and return the hard copy that will be sent home with your child
📬 Return completed forms to your child’s teacher or drop them off at the elementary office.
Thank you for taking a moment to support our school community and help WMAES continue offering outstanding opportunities to all students!
The State of Michigan now requires all public schools to distribute a Tribal Affiliation Questionnaire to families — however, submission of the form is completely voluntary. This is part of a statewide effort to strengthen partnerships with Tribal Nations and better support Indigenous students. The form allows families to indicate if their child has tribal affiliation, heritage, or citizenship with a Native Nation.

Our fall NWEA MAP Growth testing window will begin soon for students in Young Fives through Fifth Grade. This assessment measures student growth in reading and math and provides valuable information to guide instruction and support — it is not a graded test.
What is MAP Growth?
MAP Growth is a computer-adaptive assessment that adjusts in difficulty based on how students respond. This helps us gather meaningful data for students at all levels, so we can better understand what they know and what they’re ready to learn next.
📈 Why It Matters:
Provides valuable insights into each student’s learning needs
Helps teachers personalize instruction and support
Tracks individual student growth over time
Supports schoolwide planning and decision-making
📚 Helpful Resources for Families:
Thank you for your continued partnership as we work to meet the needs of every learner at WMAES!
We’re pleased to offer your child the opportunity to participate in the Hand2Hand Weekend Food Program for the 2025‑2026 school year. This program provides a bag of weekend food items each week to students whose families might be experiencing financial need — at no cost to you.
Here’s how it works:
Each week, students who are signed up will receive a bag with at least 10 food items (breakfast, snacks, and lunch or dinner items).
The bag will be discreetly delivered to your child at school before the weekend.
This will continue throughout the school year without weekly re‑sign up — unless you let us know you’d like to stop at any time.
Important notes:
If your child or someone in your household has food allergies, you’ll need to check the bag each week to make sure there are no ingredients that might cause a reaction.
After submitting the permission form, please allow at least two weeks before you receive the first bag.
If you do not receive a bag when expected, contact the school office so we can follow up.

We would like to remind everyone of the importance of regular attendance and punctuality in setting students up for success.
The school day begins promptly at 8:00 AM, and students may enter as early as 7:45 AM. Arriving on time ensures a smooth start to the day, helps establish a strong routine, and maximizes essential instructional time—setting a positive tone for learning. Every moment in the classroom is an opportunity to grow, connect, and build essential skills.
We understand that occasional absences or tardiness may happen due to illness or unforeseen circumstances, but making consistent attendance a priority helps students stay engaged and confident in their learning. Regular attendance fosters a sense of belonging, builds positive habits, and ensures students don’t miss valuable instruction.
We appreciate your partnership in making daily attendance a priority! If you have any concerns or need assistance, please reach out—we are here to help.
WMAES expects an attendance rate of 90% or higher (approximately 4 absences per quarter).
If a student accumulates 3 counted absences within the first 30 school days or their attendance rate falls below 90% at any time, families will receive a first notice via email with helpful resources. Additional support will be available based on individual needs.
Thank you for your commitment to your child’s success!
