We are excited to share that West Michigan Academy of Environmental Science has been recognized by U.S. News & World Report as both a Best Elementary School and a Best Middle School for 2026. High school rankings are released later this year, and we’ll look forward to sharing more once those are published.
This recognition reflects the hard work and care of our students, the partnership and support of our families, and the commitment and dedication of our staff. Thank you for being part of a school community where students learn, grow, and feel supported every day. We appreciate your continued support of WMAES!
There will be no school for students on Monday, November 3, as staff will be participating in a Professional Development Day focused on environmental science and outdoor learning.
This important day allows our teachers and staff to deepen their understanding of environmental education practices that make WMAES unique and help us continue providing hands-on, nature-based learning experiences for all students.
We are excited to share our new Elementary Enrichment Google Site—a central place to learn about each enrichment teacher and stay connected to all of the great things happening in Art, Technology, Physical Education, and Spanish.
On the site, you’ll be able to:
Get to know each enrichment teacher
Learn about what students explore, learn, and create in enrichment classes
Access helpful class information and resources

Thank you to everyone who continues to drive with care and patience in our parking lot. Your attention to safety helps keep our students, staff, and families safe during busy arrival and dismissal times.
We do need to address one specific concern: When exiting the WMAES parking lot, drivers must turn either left or right onto Leonard Street NW from the appropriate turn lane. Driving straight across Leonard Street into the Leonard Gardens entrance is prohibited.
We have received reports of vehicles driving straight across Leonard Street into the Leonard Gardens entrance to turn around. This creates unsafe traffic movement, adds congestion, and impacts a neighboring property. It also violates traffic expectations, and law enforcement does monitor this.
We appreciate your prompt attention to making left or right turns only when exiting our driveway. Thank you for helping us maintain a safe and respectful environment for our community and our neighbors.
We are collecting new, unwrapped toys for Toys for Tots from November 4 through December 5.
If your family would like to participate, toys can be dropped off in the following locations:
Elementary: At the entrance each morning
Middle School: Any Math Classroom
High School: Any Math Classroom
Thank you for helping us support children and families in our community this season. Your generosity makes a difference.

With the arrival of first quarter report cards, we want to remind families about our Standards-Based Grading system to ensure everyone has the information needed to interpret digital report cards, which will be sent out soon.
Our Standards-Based Grading system provides a clear and thorough way to communicate student growth and achievement in relation to the Michigan K-12 State Standards. This approach helps families better understand their child’s progress by focusing on specific skills and knowledge rather than comparing performance to peers.
Key Details About Standards-Based Grading:
Instead of traditional letter grades, proficiency scores ranging from 1 to 4 are used to reflect what students are expected to know and do.
Proficiency scores provide detailed feedback on student learning, with multiple opportunities to achieve proficiency (a score of 3).
Behaviors that promote a positive learning environment are reported separately from academic proficiency.
What Proficiency Scores Mean:
1 or 2: Reflects the learning process for new skills or concepts.
3: Indicates the student has met the grade-level standard.
4: Demonstrates the student has applied knowledge beyond the grade-level standard.
Why Standards-Based Grading?
This system focuses on your child’s specific strengths and areas for improvement in relation to grade-level expectations. Unlike traditional letter grades, proficiency scores offer a clearer picture of the skills your child is currently working on and those they’ve mastered.
