The items listed on this page are some examples of different activities that are available.  We invite you to explore other activities from the websites listed on the websites (measurement) Page.

Measurement

**NEW** Maths Curriculum Companion - Using units of measure F-6

(Victorian Department of Education and Training)

Provides teaching content, resources and teaching ideas linked to the curriculum.

MAV produced weekly home learning guides to assist teachers to support families with mathematics home learning during 2020. There are three learning levels: F – 2, 3 – 6, and 7 – 9.

The tasks are a mix of open-ended, rich tasks, challenging tasks and small investigations covering all mathematical content areas. Scroll through the activity sets to find tasks for measurement.

A list and brief overview of story books that can be used when investigating Measurement. The Long Red Scarf by Nette Hilton is also a great book for Length. These books are available to purchase via Amazon.

This site presents a range of explorations on the various attributes of Measurement (F- 6). The main aspect of the games is reading scales, rulers etc; correct or incorrect situations. The games are suited for practice and fluency.

Length and Area

This story and article explores measuring length. Why did we move from feet to metres?

This activity emphasises the essential unit structure embedded in rulers. Do children know how to measure accurately? It outlines a task using a broken ruler and unpacks the task by exploring a range of possible responses.

Exploring Length All levels

A collection of resources to help explore length including a concept flow chart, and activities from the Guidelines in Measurement and CTLM 2009.

Australian Primary Mathematics Classroom (APMC) 10 (2) 2005. An article by Lynda Weist that explores the link between area and perimeter through a hands-on, real life investigation. It can also be linked with Algebra when exploring co-variables. E.g. 2L + 2W = 24.

Capacity and Volume

This website 'Illuminations' is in association with the National Council of Teaching Mathematics (NCTM) USA. This interactive activity allows children to explore the 3 dimensions of Volume using cubes and boxes.

Mass

This site has a collection of hands-on, investigative activities on Mass. You will need to choose your appropriate year level.

Time

Investigate different passages of time.

Video and task ideas from ABC Education exploring 24 and 12 hour time.  Includes AM and PM explanation.

Angles

This is an interactive lesson for Year 6 students or it could be used for teacher knowledge. The video covers: examples of angles in real-life; identification of angles and how to measure angles using a virtual protractor.

(The video takes a few moments to load.  If it doesn't load, click on lessons (left side of screen) and then click on working with angles).

Temperature

This site has 3 rich investigative units:

The first for F-2 asks the children to; describe objects as hot or cold, describe the day as hot or cold, compare the temperature of two objects, order a group of 2 or more objects by temperature.

The second for Year 3-4 asks the children to; recognise the need for a standard unit of temperature, measure temperature (degrees Celsius) with a thermometer, calculate changes in temperatures.

The third for Year 5-6 asks the children to; use thermometers to measure temperature in degrees Celsius, and investigate factors that influence temperatures.
