Algebra

(Victorian Department of Education and Training)

The Foundation to Level 10 Mathematics Curriculum Companion is a suite of learning and teaching resources aligned to the Victorian Curriculum. It has been developed in consultation with Victorian primary and secondary teachers.

These resources were produced by  the Reframing Mathematical Futures II (RMFII) project on the development of mathematical reasoning in the middle years. The resources provide: a learning progression for algebraic reasoning, formative assessment, targeted teaching advice, links to professional learning.

This fantastic teacher's website explores the important information you should know when exploring pattern and algebra including:

Big Ideas

Misunderstandings

Good Teaching

Assessment

Activities

First Steps Mathematics is a series of teacher resource books, made available by the Western Australia Department of Education, that is organised around sets of mathematics outcomes for Number, Measurement, Space, and Chance and Data. The series will help teachers to diagnose, plan, implement and judge the effectiveness of the learning experiences they provide for students.

This fabulous website has a series of fantastic 'hands on' units of work from Foundation to Year 6 and beyond.

Have a look and choose some rich tasks that may creatively develop the key ideas you are exploring.

NCTM Illuminations  (member access only)

lluminations is a website designed by the National Council of Teachers of Mathematics (NCTM) and supported by the Verizon Foundation.

It provides a large range of resources for teaching and learning mathematics for grades pre-K—12.

As well as clearly explaining why exploring growing patterns is important in developing algebraic thinking, this site has links to:

- many great hands on ideas for classroom investigations on growing patterns

- interactive function machines

- storybooks with related tasks that explore patterns.
