MAV produced weekly home learning guides to assist teachers to support families with mathematics home learning during 2020. There are three learning levels: F – 2, 3 – 6, and 7 – 9.

The tasks are a mix of open-ended, rich tasks, challenging tasks and small investigations covering all mathematical content areas.  Scroll through the activity sets to find tasks for number.

This task challenges children to estimate, count and organise a quantity in an efficient manner. This links to an article by Doug Clarke, Ann Downton and Anne Roche where they describe an activity--for which a number line (in the form of a number roll) is a key component--that is built around the One-minute challenge game. They outline the basic game and then present a range of ways to adapt it according to content focus and student age.

This you tube clip explores ways to rename numbers in a visual and hands on representation.

Article: Peter Sullivan and James Russo (Monash Uni)

A short article exploring dynamic counting.  Includes several activities ideas and extension ideas into middle years.

On the last page of this article is a game for exploring partitioning and equivalent fractions. Let the children play the game and work out how to colour 3/4 if they only have 1/4 left on their fraction wall. Could they colour 6/8? What if you rolled 3/2? What could you colour? It is a good idea to ask the children to use a different colour pencil for each roll so you can see if they coloured correctly. Developed by Doug Clarke and Anne Roche (Australian Catholic University)
