Effective mathematics teaching relies on knowledge of students’ pre-existing ideas and the implementation of effective strategies to support students to develop more sophisticated mathematical understandings.
The descriptions of learning progressions in this section may assist teachers to develop their understanding of what growth in the Measurement strand looks like, and so provide a basis for establishing students current levels of proficiency and learning goals.
Growth points identify the key stepping stones along paths to mathematical understanding in time, length and mass. They are not necessarily sequential, as students can move between levels depending on the complexity of the task.
The diagnostic map outlines the progression of learning for all areas of Measurement and can be located at the beginning of each First Steps Mathematics book. These books need to be downloaded to access the available resources.
