Progressions of Learning

Number

Effective mathematics teaching relies on knowledge of students’ pre-existing ideas and the implementation of effective strategies to support students to develop more sophisticated mathematical understandings.  

The descriptions of learning progressions in this section may assist teachers to develop their understanding of what growth in the Number strand looks like, and so provide a basis for establishing students current levels of proficiency and learning goals.

These are some examples of work samples in the Number content strand that range from below satisfactory to above satisfactory.

Learning Framework in Number

This framework has been developed by Professor Bob Wright and is another framework for describing the key developmental stages in Number through which students progress. 

A Learning Progression for Multiplicative Thinking

Growing Mathematically is an initiative that supports and promotes the use of learning progressions, formative assessment and targeted teaching as effective teaching strategies for mathematics. 

The diagnostic map outlines the progression of learning for all areas of Number and can be located at the beginning of each First Steps Mathematics book. These books need to be downloaded to access the available resources.
