AVPS STUDENTS' ANNOUNCEMENTS/R3/3 July 2026/A2
Based on the current CBSE/NEP implementation for Class IX (2026–27)
CBSE & KVS Update on R3 Language (Class IX) –
This circular should be read along with the CBSE R3 Assessment Framework. It explains how R3 (Third Language) will be implemented in Class IX from the Academic Session 2026–27 and the changes schools need to make.
From 2026–27, every Class IX student will study R3 (Third Language).
Students can choose Sanskrit or a State/Regional Language (subject to availability and minimum enrolment).
R1: Hindi
R2: English
R3: Sanskrit or a State/Regional Language
To include R3, the weekly periods have been revised:
Hindi (R1): 5 periods
English (R2): 5 periods
R3 Language: 3 periods per week
Total periods remain 48 per week.
Assessment will follow the CBSE R3 Assessment Framework, which includes:
🎤 Listening & Speaking – 40 Marks
✍️ Creative Writing – 15 Marks
📖 Reading – 20 Marks
📝 Writing – 10 Marks
📂 Project Work – 15 Marks
Total = 100 Marks (School-Based Assessment)
Teachers should focus on:
Speaking and listening first.
Interactive classroom activities.
Reading NCERT R3 Learning Resources.
Continuous assessment throughout the year.
Students will complete one project related to:
Local culture and festivals
Folk stories and art
Technology
National initiatives
Local writers or language contributors
English and Hindi are not automatically R1 or R2.
R1, R2, and R3 refer to the three language slots, but R3 has specific eligibility requirements under NEP and CBSE's implementation.
From the CBSE documents issued so far:
R3 is intended to be an additional Indian language (such as Sanskrit or another Indian/regional language offered by the school).
The assessment framework is specifically titled "R3 Language Assessment Framework", but it does not say that English can be R3. Instead, it is meant for the third language introduced under the new policy.
