For this VFX project we had to create a parallax from a still image using after effects. We had an option to decide on what image we wanted to use. Since this had been my first parallax I went with the one which was used in the tutorial - an Owl.
Duration: 3 hours
Difficulty: Intermediate
Software Used: Adobe Photoshop & After Effects CC 2017
Before animating the owl, I had to duplicate the layer and cut it out, using the Polygon Lasso tool to select the owl. This was to separate the owl from the background.
This was were a minor issue came about. Trying to cut around the owls feathers, specifically at smaller/ thinner sections, it became quite tedious and I soon learnt that it required patience and focus. To overcome the error, I had to switch between the select and deselect within the quick selection tool (w) to perfectly cut out the owl.
On the original layer, I used the spot healing tool to remove the owl from the background; to make it look as convincing as possible that the owl was never there. Once that was done, the Photoshop document was imported into After Affects as a composition and key frames of Position, Scale and Puppet were added to control the movement of the owl and its wings, background and snow.
