Sound is a very important but often is unconsidered during the filming process. When recording audio, it needs to sound like it does in real life in order for the video to be successful.
When shooting our horror film, we had very little experience and knowledge of sound and therefore we had several problems with the sound. Problems that we encountered in the sound were:
- Background noise from TTA - This caused a lot of disturbance within a few takes and we also found it hard to communicate with the director at times. In order to avoid such an issue in the future we could inform staff and students working within the location we were filming in and ask them to take an alternative route.
- Levels being too high or too low - This is an error caused by the sound recorder. Although this issue was somewhat resolved within post-production, it would have saved a lot of time if this was adjusted whilst filming by taking several takes and listening back to the audio.
Despite this, what went well when we were recording the sound for our horror film were that:
- The audio had very little static that was picked up - this is likely to be due to how the sound operator positioned the boom pole (information on this is available by clicking on this text) and the recorder being set to the correct levels; about -12 decibels.
- A lot of the audio was useable - again this is a positive as a result of the sound recorder. She was able to position the microphone correctly and record the sound well.
