This is the recorder we use at the Brit School.
The recorder can be powered up by a power pack or with AA batteries.
When changing the batteries on the recorder, it is usually very hard to take the batteries out with your hands, therefore, you will find there is a ribbon which you can pull so that the batteries come out easily .
Key lock button - locks all of the keys. Whatever you press will not do anything. Therefore if you find that the recorder isn't functioning properly, it is likely that the key lock button is pressed.
Journalists on the move, up against tight deadlines will make use of the new ‘Retake’ feature which allows a simple button press to take you back though the previously recorded audio to edit the record start point. This enables easy re-recording over unwanted takes and offers a solution for quick editing on the move without the need to edit on a computer.
P48 on and off - This needs to be on or there will be no power in the microphone and therefore the microphone will become useless as you will not be able to hear anything.
Mono port - When you plug your microphone in, there will be two ports. One will be labelled Mono and the other is for a second mic. You must plug your microphone in the Mono port.
SD Card - When trying to gather the audio off of an SD card, you need to make sure that you take the SD card out from the side and plug it into a Windows PC only! It isn't functional with a Mac - your files wont be displayed in finder. There is also a possibility that audio files will erase entirely and all of the audio will be wiped out.
Drag and drop file transfer is supported via the USB port.
Their primal function is to make recordings of outstanding quality free from interference and all unwanted noise.
A sound recordist must know potential problems of recording sound in certain location and have solution as to how to overwrite such issues. An example of a location which needs planning is a beach.
The common film set up for filming on a beach typically looks like this:
In Summary:
Key lock button: The function of the key lock button is to disable the all the keys essentially it stops the keys from working. Its important to know if this setting is on as often times students don't realise and so think the recorder is broken.
P48: Make sure this is on as it provides the power the recorder uses to perform it's functions.
Port: There are two ports on the recorder, make sure to use the mono port.
Levels: The levels that are displayed on the screen are not ver accurate. by hitting the display button twice it brings up a more accurate display.
SD//USB: Both methods can be used to transfer recordings. but to not connect the SD or the USB to a mac computer as it will delete the work. Instead upload it onto a a PC.
