Lighting is often representative of the atmosphere. Eerie lighting adds to the overall horror experience; enhancing the audience's unease. The lighting links with Todorov's theory of equilibrium. All narratives follow a three part structure where they begin with equilibrium, where everything is balanced, progress as something comes along to disrupt that equilibrium, and finally reach a resolution, when equilibrium is restored.
For this task we were given a l.e.d. light, a canon 1200d dslr camera and a light reflector. After looking up horror lighting we were told to generate some horror-styled images in around 45 minutes then to annotate them with notes on the type of light used, angles, intensity and etc; which enabled the production of the image.
We were successful in evoking fear within the audience with the use of colour. I was also able to incorporate some visual effects for a greater sense of horror embedded into the audience.
However, by filming in low lighting the video became quite grainy and noisy. Therefore to improve I'd film in neutral light and add the red colour grading effect in post production.
Furthermore, I'd also add more sound effects for a more efficient edit although the silence does have a suspenseful effect on the audience.
