My perception of what storytelling is, is similar to the dictionaries definition: the act of relaying a series of events, usually in chronological order. In order to make a story effective there must be an aspect of change, wonder and a sense of promise. Change is fundamental as it allows the audience to relate to characters and develop an emotional connection between themselves and the story. Evoking wonder is key as it interests the audience, making them want to continue listening to find out the end result. Promise allows the audience to trust the producers - making them certain that there is a reason to stick through the whole film and engage with it. Good stories must have a strong structure, unless broken down for a given purpose; e.g. to entertain.
Storytelling is important as it acts as a form of escapism for 'trapped' audiences. Humans go through ups and downs in their lives which can sometimes be detrimental to their well-being however, by listening or relaying their own stories they're able to escape reality and enter a new imaginative space where they can be free and open. As mentioned briefly above, stories enable a personal connection for us to abandon the truth and dwell on new grounds to help them understand things or themselves better - storytelling can be used as a form of expression or a moral outlook to implement change.
In my opinion, anyone can tell stories, although stories typically come from those with experience who have the ability to teach a lesson or even provide humour for an audience. Stories can be found in books, video games, codes & pictures, word of mouth, and many other outlets which may take decades for one to list!
The future of storytelling is forever adapting to the evolution of technology. Therefore, as generations go by storytelling may no longer come in the form of ‘word of mouth’ but rather in immersive theatre; allowing listeners/ viewers to interact with the characters and feel as part of it. Or, it may take the form of 3D images. Regardless of its new format, storytelling will always be an important part of human culture and its values will never die out.
