A popular spring sport is starting up but unfortunately not many people know too much about it. Track is a coed sport that involves three different types of events. The three popular events are distance, sprints, and throwing.
Track doesn’t have have a “home” track but most of their meets are on Saturdays and they last around 3 hours. The team practices at Hamilton High almost everyday after school. Each group will get to do their own workouts and work to get better everyday.
As far as meets go, each person will do their own events along with some group events like relays. There are 19 total events. Not every athlete likes the events they are chosen to do and sometimes they wish they could do different events.
“I wish I could do the 2k steeple at every meet for every event” said junior Mike Rand. Luckily, since our track team has enough people, not a lot of athletes have to do too many events and many of them specialize in certain events.
Although track might look like people just running in circles, there are still other events that you can participate in with no running at all. These are the field events. They include discus, shot put, pole vault, long jump and high jump along with others. If you aren’t the best runner, these events might be the ones you join or even watch.
Overall, track is a very interesting sport with many different events that takes special talent to become good at. It might be too late now but there is always next year to join the track team.
“I would definitely recommend track to everyone because everyone wants to be in better shape and this is a fun sport that everyone can get in shape for,” said Rand about people joining track.
Even if track doesn’t sound like your type of sport, it would still be pretty interesting to watch. So head on out to one of their meets and watch many of your classmates compete!
Track is the forgotten spring sport. This year it seems that spring was forgotten too considering all of the snow. All of Badin's student athletes have been toughing out the below freezing temperatures.
One track athlete said that, “There's no place worse to work out than on an open frozen track.”
The whole team agreed that the worst day of practice was when they showed up at Hamilton on their snow day only to find that half of the track was covered in ice on one of their hardest workout days.
Meets are going very well for the team even though two of them were cancelled due to bad weather. Luckily, they were still able to practice through the storms.
Some of the events that our track athletes have really excelled in are the 4x800 meter relay. Both the boys and girls relay teams have placed well, some in the top three.
With lots of tough competition, at D1 meets, the athletes are pushed to work harder and run faster. They did just that at Lakota East, when many students walked away with medals.
The team is hoping to make a return to state again this year after sending off two relay teams last year. With lots more work to be done, our running rams are shining.
