Stating the Gun Debate

By: Bryan Henson

Almost every U.S. Citizen has seen one of those yellow flags with the words, “Don't tread on me," with a rattlesnake. Yet many don't know what it means. That yellow flag is a person's right to tell the government not to take away the power given to us by the Bill of Rights.

In the past few years America has been plagued with tragedy after tragedy. A recent shooting in Florida has sparked a match. High schools students all around the country are walking out of school to speak out against guns in schools.

The government has done little to fix the problem at hand, but it really is a tricky situation. Some people urge to ban guns, others think arming teachers is a good idea and some think adding metal detectors and making schools like a jail house is the way to go.

They can't just take away everyone's guns. The second amendment was given to us so that we can protect ourselves and our families from intruders and the government both.

Another problem is that if the government takes guns away, how do we stay safe. If bad guys don't have guns that doesn't change their intent, they just have a knife instead of a firearm. As a school with a trapshooting team many people feel that the second amendment should be upheld.

According to one trapshooter, “Guns aren't the problem, were around them every day and never feel scared. The right people with guns is fine, but some kids should never be able to touch them.”

Loca sheriff, Richard K. Jones has recently gained national recognition for training teachers to carry guns in school. His main message was that good people with the right training stop bad people.

An anonymous student doesn't have the same opinion, “I don't know how I would feel knowing that my teacher has a gun on them. That might mess up the relationship.” There is a good chance that a large portion of students have the same feelings.

It's not an easy fix by any stretch, but something needs to be done to ensure the safety of students. If the government won't fix it, then the kids themselves will make an effort.
