Theater is making big moves here at Badin and you should come out to watch them. They recently just produced “Back to the 80’s a Totally Awesome Musical,“ which was a play about high schoolers in the eighties.
If you didn’t come out to watch their plays this year, make sure to support the Theater 2 members, Heather O'Hara, Emily Burley, Rachel Siemer and Benny Wang, as they wrap up the 2017-18 school year with “The Complete Works of William Shakespeare (Abridged).” This production will cover all of Shakespeare's shows and his sonnets.
Show dates are May 4 at 7:30 p.m. and May 5 at 2:30 p.m. and 7:30 p.m. Tickets are $5 in the Little Theatre.
Next school year, Mrs. Cline hopes to put together four shows that will be fun and challenging. These shows will include the musical, one acts, a play and two acts. She also hopes to continue getting involved in the Thespian Troupe.
Mrs. Cline says, “this allows students to participate in workshops, a whole state show and conferences.”
With big hopes for the future Mrs. Cline tells us a few of her plans.
“I would love for the shows to be student run, and back to the 80's came very close to that. I would like to get an improv group started and possibly expand into more theater-related classes.”
Theater is a great way to express yourself and have fun. If you want to get involved email Mrs. Cline to be part of the Badin theater productions. If you don’t want to act, but want to be part of the action then you could also be a Stage Manager. They also need members to help with costumes, lights, sound and props.
The theater program recently put together and performed the play “Back to the 80's..the Totally Awesome Musical". The play was performed once each day from April 12-15th. Many students either participated in the play or went and watched it. Sophomore Colin Crank said, “....”
The play, written by Neil Gooding, was this year’s big production from the drama department. Cast members were able to tell the story of a group of students going through school in the 80s. With tons of drama, musical performances, and dances, the play was fun and exciting.
After putting a lot of time and dedication into the play, first year drama teacher Mrs. Cline had a lot to say about the production. “Happy couldn't begin to express how I think it turned out. The cast has lots to be proud of. They elevated the show to new levels and I think it will really help in future performance as well, they have something to top! They "had the time of their lives, as did we all!”
Although the play only ran for one weekend, there were weeks and weeks of preparation to create a professional looking performance. There were many late nights and long practices. Both directors and actors needed to do extensive research to make sure they nailed the whole 80s aspect that the story needed.
There were a multitude of little things that were very important to the cast and they worked very hard on. This was no easy thing to do, it required many different kinds of rehearsals, giving up Saturdays to create the sets, and a lot of memorizing.
Sophomores Max Hall and Emma Wesner were both main roles in the play. Hall played the role of Michael Feldman who was the popular kid at school. Wesner played a teacher named Mrs. Brannigan who was going through a breakup with her boyfriend. Both were very nervous going into opening night. After practicing and rehearsing with the cast for a long time, they all really grew close together.
Hall said “The best part of the production I have to say was the cast and the experience we’ve had together.”
While Wesner agreed and said “The best part of the play was definitely the cast. I made so many new friends and grew closer to older friends. My cast became a support system, and I couldn't have done the show without them. They never failed to cheer me up when I'm down and make me laugh.”
Both members of the production and I am sure many others will all agree that theater is a great thing especially here at Badin. If you missed this years production be sure to catch one next year or even sign up to be a part of it!
