A Level Mathematics

The Maths department aims to promote the love of mathematics, where mathematicians develop conceptual understanding and fluency of the fundamentals of mathematics through practice, recall, and application.

This allows students to explore connections, thus igniting their intellectual curiosity and prepares them for everyday life and future employment.

Entry Grade requirements: Grade 7 or above


A level Mathematics is a linear course, sat at the end of the two years. The subject content is split into three modules, Pure, Statistics and Mechanics

Although traditionally seen as complementing the sciences, Mathematics forms a compatible combination with many other subjects and is very popular with employers. The statistics element of the course may be particularly helpful with Geography, Economics, Biology, and Psychology while the mechanics units are helpful for students who hope to study Physics or Engineering.

ASSESSMENT


A Level Assessment – This comprises of 3 papers:

Papers 1 and 2: 2-hour papers assessing Pure Mathematics (each paper has a 1/3 weighting)

Paper 3: 2-hour paper assessing Mechanics and Statistics (this paper has a 1/3 weighting)

HOW PARENTS / CARERS CAN HELP


It is requested that parents play a role in their child’s home learning. The list outlined suggests a few quick and easy methods, where parents/carers are able to help and support.

Monitoring of their child’s work in terms of their content, presentation, and organisational skills.

Ensure their child catches up on any work missed.

Ensure that their child is taking responsibility for their own learning by completing plenty of practice questions.

Encourage their child to have a revision plan.
