OVERVIEW OF COURSE
This course aims to develop students’ interest in and enjoyment of literature and literary studies as they:
Read widely and independently both set texts and others that they have selected for themselves.
Engage critically and creatively with a substantial body of texts and ways of responding to them.
Develop and effectively apply their knowledge of literary analysis and evaluation.
Explore the contexts of the texts they are reading and others’ interpretations of them.
Assessments Objectives (skills students are examined on):
AO1: Articulate informed, personal, and creative responses to literary texts, using associated concepts and terminology, and coherent, accurate written expression.
AO2: Analyse ways in which meanings are shaped in literary texts.
AO3: Demonstrate understanding of the significance and influence of the contexts in which literary texts are written and received.
AO4: Explore connections across literary texts.
AO5: Explore literary texts informed by different interpretations.
PROGRAMME OF STUDY
ASSESSMENT
Paper 1 Exam: Love through the Ages
3 hours – 40 % of final grade
Section A: Othello
Section B: Unseen Poetry
Section C: The Great Gatsby and Pre 1900 Poetry comparison
Paper 2 Exam: Texts in Shared Contexts
Paper Option 2B
2.5 hours – 40% of final grade
Three options to choose from, each option has two sections- a single essay on a set text, and then a comparison of two texts, plus an unseen prose question.
NEA: Non Exam Assessment:
20% of final grade
This is an independent critical study of two texts; students must choose their set texts and formulate a question of their own to write a comparative essay of 2500 words.

If you have the time, why not read the set texts- this can aid discussion around the themes and ideas, assisting to greater analytical thought and discussion outside the classroom.
