A Level Further Mathematics

The Maths department aims to promote the love of mathematics, where mathematicians develop conceptual understanding and fluency of the fundamentals of mathematics through practice, recall, and application.

This allows students to explore connections, thus igniting their intellectual curiosity and prepares them for everyday life and future employment.

Why study this subject?

If you have a particular talent and enjoy mathematics, then you should consider studying Further Mathematics. You will extend the knowledge you already have gained through studying the A level course and encounter new areas of mathematics. The mathematics covered will be helpful not just to students intending to study mathematics at degree level but to any potential physicists, engineers, or computer scientists.

A Level Course content for Further Maths you will study Core Pure Mathematics, which includes proof, algebra, matrices, more advanced work on vectors together with polar coordinates, hyperbolic functions and more advanced methods of differentiation and integration. This combines with two other Applied options either Further Mechanics 1 and Further Statistics 1 or Further Mechanics1 and Further Mechanics 2.

A Level Assessment

Paper 1: Core Pure Mathematics 1 – one paper of 1 hour 30 minutes (weighting of 25%)

Paper 2: Core Pure Mathematics 2 – one paper of 1 hour 30 minutes (weighting of 25%)

Paper 3: Further Mechanics 1 – one paper of 1 hour 30 minutes (weighting of 25 %)

Paper 4: Further Statistics 1 or Further Mechanics 2 – one paper of 1 hour 30 minutes (weighting of 25 %)

HOW PARENTS / CARERS CAN HELP


It is requested that parents play a role in their child’s home learning. The list outlined suggests a few quick and easy methods, where parents/carers are able to help and support.

Monitoring of their child’s work in terms of their content, presentation, and organisational skills.

Ensure their child catches up on any work missed.

Ensure that their child is taking responsibility for their own learning by completing plenty of practice questions.

Encourage their child to have a revision plan.
