Avanti exists to help each person become a well-rounded human being through intellectual, moral, and spiritual growth, and so make the world a better place.
The educational vision of Avanti House School is one where deeply inspired teachers nurture joyful pupils and nourish their innate passion for learning. Learning is a quest to discover each pupil’s unique gifts and potential to lay the foundation for a lifelong journey of discovery.
Our curriculum, from KS3 through to A-level, is ambitious and designed to give all learners the knowledge and cultural capital they need to succeed in life. All parts of our curriculum support our three-fold path of Educational Excellence, Character Formation and Spiritual Insight, through conscious and coherent planning. The curriculum is designed to provide memorable and meaningful experiences for all of our learners and is enriched with educational visits, yoga, and meditation.
Students are actively involved in creating their own paths of learning and choose which areas they wish to gain deeper insights into. Through the use of examining the big questions of life in a holistic, values-based and contextualised curriculum, students are encouraged to develop their own unique pathway, questioning their own assumptions and engaging in empathic dialogue.
Our curriculum is designed to provide opportunities for all pupils, regardless of age, gender, ethnicity, disability, religious belief, sexual orientation and socio-economic backgrounds. Teaching through a lens of diversity develops the intellectual sophistication and empathy of our pupils when they see themselves and others reflected in their learning experiences. Students develop the ability to function with awareness, knowledge and interpersonal skill when engaging people of different backgrounds, assumptions, beliefs, values and behaviours.
Teachers embrace a challenging holistic curriculum to cultivate independently thoughtful and reflective students by working towards a sense of mastery, emphasising depth, not just breadth. Teachers utilise a strong knowledge of the subjects they teach to develop expertise; teaching materials, resources and assessments support learning for all pupils. Embedded with an understanding of cognitive science, a culture of intellectual curiosity and continuous professional development and research inform the day-to-day teaching across the school. Differentiated and creative planning supports our vision to ensure high quality first teaching for all pupils.
A three-year Key Stage 3 provides students with the time and space to gain a secure understanding of the subjects they study. An experience-based curriculum, formed around big questions, supports the transition from knowledge to wisdom. Teachers explicitly teach what is implicit, exploring concepts ranging from general study skills to knowing how you “know” something. Avanti students are guided to articulate their thinking and systematically reflect on their metacognitive processes to self-regulate learning. Students take ownership of their learning experience by means such as self-organised learning, enabling them to make connections between their subjects and integrate new knowledge into larger concepts to support long term subject knowledge.
Our unique philosophy towards education is demonstrated through an excellent provision for Philosophy, Religion and Ethics, PSHE and Sanskrit. Students make conscientious choices, develop moral literacy, promote the common good and display a sense of stewardship as well as a reverence for all life, nature and the Earth’s resources. The principles of restorative practices can be seen across the school and create an environment that allows all pupils to focus and enjoy their learning.
The capacity to internalise and put into practice what we have learned is the true test of learning. Pupils are able to demonstrate their learning and development along our three-fold path through ethical and compassionate acts, as well as through meaningful formative assessments. High quality summative assessments allow pupils to demonstrate their growing understanding of their subjects and achieve fluency in their skills and knowledge. Students are supported to make good progress irrespective of their starting point.
Our internal assessments reflect the content and knowledge that has been taught to students, allowing them to demonstrate their proficiency in the subject. Elements of literacy, oracy and numeracy underpin the subject knowledge and contextual learning that has taken place. The use of subject-specific vocabulary and language is evident in student written work and wider reading of subject areas is actively encouraged.
Pupils are well prepared to transition through our curriculum from KS3 to A-level, and are empowered to succeed in their next steps of education, training or employment. Our curriculum enables student progress to match the best schools in the country.
Knowledge is defined as reality distinguished from illusion for the welfare of all. Avanti pupils practice ethical and compassionate acts that are beneficial for others and their community, and make the world a better place.
