Rachael Piotte

My work aims to show beauty in the everyday. Our lives are filled with many objects and scenes that we often miss out on in our typical day, our eyes skimming over them because of their familiarity and the pace of our lives. But if we pause to look closer, there are beautiful moments of color and light that can be found in unexpected places.

My paintings focus on the nuances of color changes, and on hidden touches of color that we don't tend to notice at first glance. This series in particular is meant to give a spotlight to single objects, portraying their individual qualities and colors without the context and relationship of a traditional multi-object still life arrangement. I have chosen organic objects as my subject, as they feel more alive than ceramics or glass. This feeling of life helps me to get to know my subject better, and portray their individual qualities with more care. The white background is meant to bring more attention to the color changes within the object itself, rather than the relationship between the subject and the color of its environment.
