Throughout history, craft has been one of the most important expressions of cultural development. The study of this history, known as material culture, helps us to understand the current landscape of diversity and culture, as well as the prior landscapes that birthed them. My work —Morris— focuses this historical lens on the work of 19th century textile designer William Morris to create an understanding of his work as shaped by the ideologies and philosophies that drove him. The work itself is only a few pages of a proposed graphic novel, which would encapsulate the life of Morris, as well as other moments in the history and culture of textiles. By drawing on a rich visual and iconographic language of comics, this work bridges a gap of understanding between material, history, and philosophy.
