Sisterhood: A Cherished Bond
Elena Vasquez
Sisters, a complex but simple bond. As a child she is given the task to watch over you, you follow her lead, naturally. Your first friend, but at the same instant she is also your first enemy, fighting feels like bloody wars where your heart has been torn. Even so, she is the only one that can make you laugh and smile like never before, she makes life seem brighter. What a gift it is to have a sister. You share each other’s beings, she is your other element. Through secrets and material things, she is part of your soul that never fades. A reflection of the things you strive to be or be less like.
People underestimate how easy it is to become a stranger, even with those that are a door away. Just a couple of years ago, I would have never believed the bond I have with my sister now, that the stranger next door was someone irreplaceable, that the secret animosity would fade. We live with the comfort and believe we will have our sisters at the end of the day. Ultimately, we fail to realize that someone so close to you will eventually have to go their own way, you will be overwhelmed by how proud you are but scared of how the world will treat her. You take for granted the moments when you would spend all your time together, but face the harsh reality that you have separate lives. I do believe though that as scary as this world is, they cannot burn the bond that connects our souls. No matter the distance or time, nothing can compete with the magic of sisterhood. Life is somehow easier to endure together, even loving is easier because of her.
I do not wish for anybody to limit their search for sisterhood, those of us who were not given a hand are capable of receiving this gift. Humans were given the capability to love, share, listen, and create bonds, we are not limited by blood as we have the capability to understand. Your sisters are the ones you determine to be, those who are with us through the good and bad, who accept us unconditionally. I believe that everybody should give themselves a chance at sisterhood. As for me, I know that I would never be complete without my sister.
