Super Mario Bros. Wonder Review: It’s weird and wacky, yet wonderful!
Jacob Handal
Hello, fellow gamers, Jacob here! Welcome back to Gamer Zone where we talk about all the latest games and gaming news.
Today I’m writing about the newest game in the Mario Bros. franchise: Super Mario Bros. Wonder, and I’m going out of my way to tell you if you should buy this game or not… Let’s-a-goo!
Of course, since this game only came out a couple of weeks ago (at the time of writing this), I haven't beaten it yet, but I have played enough to have some thoughts to share.
First, I just want to talk about the art style. It’s one we have never seen in any Mario game ever. It's so vibrant and so eye-appealing. I’ve got to say this might be the prettiest game I’ve ever played. Nintendo did something different this time: Instead of making their developers have a certain time limit and certain rules to the game, they let the “devs” add anything they wanted! This also made this game one of the hardest Mario games in a long time. It’s insane to me how much thought and passion was put into it.
Now let’s talk about one of the most important aspects in a video game—the story. In this game, Nintendo wanted to change things up, so instead of the Mushroom Kingdom, this story takes place in the Flower Kingdom where Prince Florian lives and rules. (Fun Fact! Did you know that Prince Florian actually made his first appearance in the old Super Mario anime?) In the story, Bowser comes and uses the wonder seed to turn himself into Prince Florian’s castle, so it's up to Mario, Luigi, Peach, Daisy, Nabit, and Yoshi to save the Flower Kingdom.
Onto the gameplay: Honestly, the gameplay is all you’d expect from a Mario game. Although, like other games, this one introduces a new mechanic—badges. Badges can give you an advantage: From high jump to cap glider, the badges are all diverse and different. Also, something I wanted to note was that the game feels much more fluid, and the controls are way sharper and not as floaty, unlike the New Super Mario Bros Series.
In conclusion, this has got to be one of the best Mario games ever made. Again, that is just my opinion, but overall it looks like a lot of people agree. Its amazing mechanics and controls, charming art style, and fun story make this a must-buy for platformer fans!
Graphics/Art Style: 10/10
Controls: 9.5/10
Story: 9/10
Compatibility: 3/10 (although I get why they made it Switch exclusive)
Replayability: 10/10
My Overall Rating: 9.8/10
Vote for what game I review next!
