Upcoming AASCA Swimming Competition 2024
Silvio Larios
Last March, some of AST’s talented eagles participated for the first time in the AASCA (Association of American Schools of Central America) swimming tournament in Nicaragua. Students and fans were excited that AST was becoming more involved in different sporting competitions, and many of the swimmers won medals. Some even broke records set in previous AASCA competitions.
This year, the eagles have again been invited to the AASCA swimming tournament, which is taking place in Guatemala. Here is what a few members from the swim team had to say about representing the school, how they are feeling about these experiences, and what they are looking forward to in competing for a second time in AASCA swimming.
Marco Larios, middle-schooler, has been a swimmer almost all his life. He has practiced the sport for around seven years and has been a swimmer from one of the local swimming clubs here in Tegucigalpa, AJ Swim Team. Marco is known for his nice and elegant breaststroke and speed.
This is what Marco had to say during the interview:
“Last year was a very fun experience where we basically got to know the competition and the level they were at. It was interesting to see the high level of talent that the other American schools have to offer in swimming. Not only was it fun to compete against that talent but also to become friends with some of those athletes. I really enjoyed Nicaragua as well, it was a very pretty place to be in. I'm looking forward to showing how much better I've gotten since last year, winning medals and most importantly representing the school.”
Another AST swimmer is senior Natalia Funes, a talented backstroker who is part of local swimming club the Tiburones. She has been swimming for quite some time now and could be considered an experienced swimmer. Funes represented AST last year and will do so again in 2024.
Here is what she had to say:
“For me, AASCA Swim was a super fun experience. It was something very out of my comfort zone and it gave me the opportunity to train with different coaches and make more friends. Last year, I was pretty nervous about it since I wanted us to do well. But this year I’m more confident in our team and I feel like this year will be just as fun as last year’s competition.”
This is AST’s second year participating in the AASCA Swim competition, and the team seems excited and ready to represent their school and bring back many medals.
We wish every one of our swimmers good luck and the best for this upcoming competition!
