Welcome back, fellow eagles, to the place where you can find out about events happening in the football world! If you're into football, you’re in the right place! Allow me to introduce myself again: My name is Luis Alfonso Lacayo, and you are reading my Football Feed. Today, we’ll consider the following topics: The Ballon d’or, Mbappe’s lackluster performances for Real Madrid, and Barcelona’s incredible run in both the Champions League and La Liga.
The Ballon d’or was awarded on Monday, October 28, and the result was surprising to most people (myself included). The central defensive midfielder from Manchester City, Rodri, won the 2024 Ballon d’or. Most people believed that Vinicius Jr. was going to win the prestigious prize. For people who don’t know, the entire Real Madrid team didn’t even go to the ceremony because the winner was leaked earlier that morning. Although Real Madrid won Club of the Year, and Carlo Ancoloti won the manager of the year, they didn’t arrive at the ceremony to show their support for Vinicius Jr. Rodri who had 12 goals and 14 assists last season. Some awards he won include: The Premier League, EURO 2024, and the EURO’s Best Player of the Tournament.
In the last edition of Football Feed, we considered how Mbappe didn’t have the start we thought he would for Real Madrid. Since then, he has given slightly better performances but still not what is expected of him. Mbappe in 16 appearances has eight goals and two assists in all competitions. He is doing well, but, when you compare it to Vinicius Jr., who (as of November 12) has 12 goals and seven assists in 17 appearances, it is not that impressive. That means Vinicius averages 1.6 goal contributions per game (goal + assist), and he isn’t even a striker! AndMbappe only averages 0.6 goal contributions per game. People expected that this year it would be the Mbappe show in Real Madrid, but by how things are going right now, we can clearly see that Vinicius is the main man at Real Madrid.
For the past few years, Barcelona has been the laughing stock of big teams across Europe. However, this year it’s all different. This season they hired Hansi Flick as their manager. Doesn’t that ring a bell? Yes, Hansi Flick is the same manager who had just four years ago thrashed Barcelona 8 - 2 while he was managing Bayern Munich. Barcelona put all their faith in the German, and so far, he has delivered! The season has just started and Hansi Flick has transformed the attack, and Raphina, Lewandowski, and Lamine Yamal have become a nightmare of defensive lines across Europe. It is hard to believe since the season just started three months ago, but Barcelona's attack has already registered 51 goals in all competitions! Raphinia has 12 goals and 10 assists in 17 appearances (1.2 goal contributions per game) , Lamine Yamal has six goals and eight assists in 16 appearances (0.8 goal contributions per game) , and Lewandowski has 19 goals and 2 assists in 17 appearances (1.2 goal contributions per game). Their attack has destroyed small and big teams alike. Real Madrid and Bayern Munich have been the first of many big teams to feel the wrath of Hansi Flick’s Barcelona.
To wrap up this edition of Football Feed, I’ll just say that the start of the season has been electrifying and everything we could have asked for. Mbappe is still struggling with Madrid, Barcelona has returned as a powerhouse in European football, and the Ballon d’or has caused much controversy. Although Lamine Yamal and Vinicius Jr. have been great in El Classicos, nothing can really compare them to the GOATs of football...
