Rio, Brought Back to the Big Screen
Jimena H.
Four years after the pandemic, AST's GIN (Global Issues Network) club was able to host their first-ever movie night, showing Rio! During the event, along the elementary hallway, different stands were located where each branch of GIN could sell things to get money for their causes. The movie was displayed in the covered court, with the screen in front and people lying down on pillows and blankets on the courts. Behind them, there were a few benches where people could sit and eat while watching the film. There was a variety of foods like pizza, crunchy tacos, and sweets! Alongside the back of the benches, three were more stands selling things like jewelry, Funko Pop figurines, and other merchandise. I even saw some Feastables. In the green area, there were two giant inflatables of chip bags (Zambos and Taqueritos) — I was quite surprised to see them; I didn’t know they made them that big!
There were also movie-themed decorations like foam cutouts of the characters, vines to make the area feel jungle-like, and even fairy lights that twinkled when the sun went down. At first, I was hesitant to go because the poster used to promote the event used images from the film's sequel. However, I was pleasantly surprised to see they were showing the first Rio instead, and I had a great time walking around the event and watching the movie with my friends. Despite this movie releasing in 2011—more than a decade ago—going to see it on a big screen gave me the opportunity to appreciate it more, and it brought back some wonderful memories of my childhood. At the young age of two, my brother was obsessed with Rio, demanding to see it 24/7! ...What wonderful days. And, honestly? We need to appreciate doing activities like this especially with our families and friends. You could say it’s only a movie, but I believe there's more to it. I would really love to see more activities like this at AST. This could really open up opportunities for students to make fun memories with their loved ones.
