WHAT WE'RE LEARNING IN CLASS

Math: We just finished our long division unit, and just started adding and subtracting decimals today! During this unit we will be adding and subtracting decimals with the standard algorithm and with models. We are also focusing on rounding.

Literacy (Reading & Comprehension): This upcoming week we will be working on theme. Theme is the overall message of a piece of literature. We will first look at common topics for theme (i.e. friendship, love, equality, hope, hard work). We will then determine the theme by asking ourselves 3 things:

1. What did the characters learn?

2. How did the character grow or change?

3. Why did the characters act this way?

Writing: This week we are focusing on writing summaries. We do something called a "Key Word Summary." The steps for completing one look like:

1. Read the passage

2. Number the paragraphs

2. Read again and highlight key words and phrases

3. Write down key words and phrases on the key word notes sheet in the box that correlates with the paragraph

4. Use the key words and phrases to write a summary

Social Studies: This week we have been taking a close look at the different regions in the colonies. We read a fun article about Roanoke (click HERE if you would like to learn more about it). We are also learning about the climate, geography, and economy of the original 13 colonies.

CLASS NEEDS

Many of you have asked if you can donate anything to our class. While it's not required, it means the world to me! If you would like to make a donation of your choice to my current Donor's Choose project, please click HERE. I am wanting to get a variety of classroom supplies that are always needed in the classroom.
