WHAT WE'RE LEARNING IN CLASS

Math: We finished our Order of Operations and Patterns unit and overall, everyone did so well! Order of Operations can be really tricky, and they exercised growth mindsets and were very successful. We started our Decimals and Fractions unit on Monday.

Literacy (Reading & Comprehension): We are focusing on Main Idea. For the next month, we are going to be learning a lot about refugees. A big focus this time around is previewing the text and text features (maps, graphs, photographs, captions, bolded words, headings). Previewing text helps readers to gather understanding and make connections before reading. We've then been reading articles and determining the main ideas and important details for the different sections. To determine the main idea, we have been using the 5 W strategy (answering who, what, when, where, and why) to construct a main idea statement.

Writing: This week, we've been working on an opinion writing benchmark. Mrs. Hamilton and I are so impressed with our 5th grade - our writing benchmark scores are higher than the district's right now!

Science: Mrs. Hamilton and I switch for science, so right now, my class is in with her learning about physical changes! This includes landslides, erosion, volcanos, earthquakes - it's a super fun and interesting unit.
