#7 This Week in 5th Grade

So sorry to the parents of Later Gators that you haven't been getting my emails. I couldn't figure out what was going on, and I just learned that on Skyward I was only sending the emails to the Early Birds. Oops!

Thank you for such a great round of Parent Teacher Student Conferences! It was so nice to meet with all of you that came. You have such great kids, and I feel so lucky to be able to know them and work with them.

WHAT WE'RE LEARNING IN CLASS

Math: We are continuing with our long division unit. By the end of the unit, students will be able to divide 4 digits by 2 digits. Quotients (answers to division problems) may include remainders. Computation questions they will answer will look similar to this:

  • 37,520 ÷ 76
  • 926 ÷ 32

Literacy (Reading & Comprehension): We are continuing to work on Main Idea. We are finding the main idea by by determining the topic of a short passage of text, then gathering information using the 5 W's (Who, What, When, Where, and Why) to find essential information. They will then determine what's essential and use that to create a 10 words or less sentence stating the main idea.

Writing: This past week we have been working on our third opinion paper covering Zoos. We are focusing heavily on what goes into body paragraphs. A body paragraph should include:

  • Transition and topic sentence
  • Text evidence copied from the text using quotation marks, as well as crediting the author/text
  • Explanation of evidence
  • Real life example

Social Studies: We are starting our unit on Colonies. We integrate Social Studies into our Literacy instruction, so each week, the class is reading a passage covering Colonies. We will do a final project (similar to the Explorer project) once we finish the unit.

CLASS NEEDS

Many of you have asked if you can donate anything to our class. While it's not required, it means the world to me! If you would like to make a donation of your choice to my current Donor's Choose project, please click HERE. I am wanting to get a variety of classroom supplies that are always needed in the classroom.

These pictures show the kids working on their math centers! They do 3 rotations: Seat work (basically a paper/pencil center), Technology (where they work on Prodigy and Fact Monster), and Games (these games go over what we're currently learning, and also cover topics we already went over for review).

This Friday we did Poetry Friday! We learned how to write a Haiku, and then we wrote Haikus about Fall and painted a tree to go along with our poems.
