#20 This Week in 5th Grade

Announcements/Important Dates

*Please turn in Clear Creek permission forms with $30 as soon as possible. Please keep in mind that if we do not get enough permission slips with money included, it will be very difficult to pay for the bus and buy the supplies needed. Clear Creek is such a great experience, but it does require a larger budget to make it happen.

Friday February 14: Valentine Box Contest

  • I sent a pink note home today about this. On Valentine's Day, we will be having a Valentine Box Contest where students will get to vote for the best box in different categories. It should be fun! This is not required, but the more kids that participate, the more fun it will be! Please note that I will not be giving time in class to do this. On the note, I included a list of our class names in case you need them to write valentines.

Monday February 17: President's Day - no school

Thursday May 7: Hope of America Performance - please remember to register online if your child will be performing with us at the Marriott Center at BYU. I am still missing a lot of permission forms from students. I need them back, even if you are not attending. If you need another form, please email me.

WHAT WE'RE LEARNING IN CLASS

Math: We are continuing to work on our decimals and fractions unit, and we will be wrapping it up next week. We are heavily focusing on simplifying fractions and comparing fractions. This is preparing us for our next unit - adding and subtracting fractions.

Literacy (Reading & Comprehension): This week we have been working on Point of View. The three points of view we are learning about are first person, second person, and third person (omniscient and limited).

  • First person: uses I, my, me, and mine; usually the main character is narrating, helps convey deep emotion
  • Second person: uses you, your; makes the reader part of the action; typically used in self-help books, video games, and choose your adventure books
  • Third person: uses they, he, and she; limited third person is when the narrator describes the thoughts and feelings of one character; omniscient third person is when the narrator describes the thoughts and feelings of multiple characters

We are reading excerpts from different texts highlighting different points of view, and then writing our own stories in each point of view!

Writing: We are are continuing to wrap up our Refugee informational essay.

Science: Mrs. Hamilton and I switch for science, so right now, my class is in with her learning about physical changes! This includes landslides, erosion, volcanos, earthquakes - it's a super engaging and interesting unit. We also had a fun presenter come in this week to teach us about chemical reactions and changes. There was a demonstration, followed by labs where the students got to (safely) mix chemicals to observe changes and reactions (see photos below!).
