If you are able, please send in peanut butter with your student in order to support National Hunger Awareness Month AND so that our class can win a cheesecake!

Friday September 27: Last day to turn in Peanut Butter

Wednesday & Thursday October 9-10: Parent Teacher Conferences

WHAT WE'RE LEARNING IN CLASS

Math: We are working on our multiplication unit. So far we have learned exponents, identifying patterns when multiplying by powers of 10, multiplying multi-digit numbers by 1 digit, and multiplying multi-digit numbers by 2 digits (using the standard algorithm). Questions students will be able to answer will look like this:

  • 342 x 23
  • 23 x 8
  • 340 x 5,000

Literacy (Reading & Comprehension): In 5th grade, we focus heavily on text evidence to answer comprehension questions, as well as include in our writing. We are using the "formula" ICE a Quote to answer literal and inferential questions. I stands for Introduce (credit the author/text), C stands for Copy (copy a sentence from the text using quotation marks), and E stands for Explain (explain the evidence).

Here is an example of a question and answer using ICE a Quote.

  • Question: How did Nina solve her family's problem?
  • Answer: The text states, "Nina remembered back to her rafting lessons." Nina was able to remember that they needed to pull the raft from the rock in order to keep moving forward.

Writing: We will be focusing on opinion writing till January. Right now, we are specifically focusing on writing a great introduction paragraph. This includes having an engaging hook, a thesis, background information, and three reasons that support the thesis.

Social Studies: This upcoming week, we will be working on an Explorer project. Each student will choose an explorer to study and they will make either a power point using Google Slides or a poster. They will be gathering information on their voyages, motivation for exploring, discoveries, impact on Natives, and interesting facts.

CLASS NEEDS

Many of you have asked if you can donate anything to our class. While it's not required, it means the world to me! If you would like to make a donation of your choice to my current Donor's Choose project, please click HERE. I am wanting to get a variety of classroom supplies that are always needed in the classroom.
