#12 This Week in 5th Grade

5th grade did an amazing job performing at our Veterans Assembly, and those that volunteered to do our Flag Ceremony were so respectful and were great. We had a veteran of the Special Forces come speak to us, and we were able to give him over 100 letters to send to those serving overseas.

The 5th grade was also able to go on a meaningful field trip to American Fork's Veterans Day commemoration - a huge thank you to all the parents who walked with us and helped out!

WHAT WE'RE LEARNING IN CLASS

Math: We are working on multiplying and dividing decimals. By the end of the unit they will be able to multiply and divide decimals using the standard algorithm and 10 x 10 grids.

Literacy (Reading & Comprehension): We are continuing to work on theme. Theme is the overall message of a piece of literature. We will first look at common topics for theme (i.e. friendship, love, equality, hope, hard work). We will then determine the theme by asking ourselves 3 things:

1. What did the characters learn?

2. How did the character grow or change?

3. Why did the characters act this way?

Writing: We will be starting Monday on our Patriots and Loyalists essay. This unit will integrate our social studies unit on the Revolutionary War.

Social Studies: We are working on our American Revolution unit! This week we having been learning about what events led to the American Revolution. We've learned about The Stamp Act, The Tea Act, The Boston Tea Party, The Intolerable Acts, and The Boston Massacre. We also analyzed different groups of people who fought in the war and if they fought for the Continental Army or The British (or if they fought for both).
