#11 This Week in 5th Grade

Hope you all have a great weekend!

Announcements/Important Dates

Monday November 11th: Veterans Day Assembly and Field Trip (See information below)

Assembly: Please send your child in a red, white, or blue top and jeans. If they volunteered to our flag ceremony, please send them in their scout uniform.

Field Trip: The 5th grade will be going on a field trip to the American Fork Tabernacle Monday November 11th. We have been invited to attend a community commemoration for Veterans Day. We will be walking from the school around 10:30 and we need to be in our seats no later than 10:50. It will be about an hour long (we will eat lunch at school when we get back). At the beginning of the school year, you all signed a universal field trip form to cover the field trips we would go on this year. If you have any issues with your child attending, please let me know via email.

WHAT WE'RE LEARNING IN CLASS

Math: We started our unit on multiplying and dividing decimals. By the end of the unit they will be able to multiply and divide decimals using the standard algorithm and models.

Literacy (Reading & Comprehension): We are continuing to work on theme. Theme is the overall message of a piece of literature. We will first look at common topics for theme (i.e. friendship, love, equality, hope, hard work). We will then determine the theme by asking ourselves 3 things:

1. What did the characters learn?

2. How did the character grow or change?

3. Why did the characters act this way?

Writing: We are going to be writing our next opinion paper starting Monday on Patriots and Loyalist. This unit will integrate our social studies unit on the Revolutionary War.

CLASS NEEDS

Many of you donated to my Donor's Choose project. A HUGE thank you to all of you that did! My project was funded (yay!) and now we will have new stools, class sets of markers and skinny markers, pencils, and erasers. These are some classroom basics that we always need and are also always running out of :) Thanks again to those of you who donated to make it possible to get those supplies!

If you are wanting to make a donation to our class, we are in need of:

  • Black Expo dry erase markers
  • Tissues
  • Graph paper

Love these kids so much!

Thanks for all of the birthday love! I feel so lucky to be your teacher!

Mrs. Chavez brought the cutest guest to our class on Thursday!
