#25 This Week in 5th Grade

Announcements/Important Dates

****UPDATE: ALL SCHOOLS IN ALPINE SCHOOL DISTRICT ARE CLOSED STARTING MONDAY MARCH 16th! Click here to see the District's plan. Please know that Mrs. Hamilton and I are working closely together to ensure that despite distance learning, your students will have an enriched learning experience and be prepared for next year. We will send out more information about distance learning via email next Monday or Tuesday.

I am also so sorry to inform you that due to COVID-19 issues, the District has cancelled Clear Creek. Please know that your students’ health and safety are our first priority. In terms of the money you have already paid, please contact Tina Lewis in the office for your refund. We are so sorry for the inconvenience, and are so sad that the kids won’t have this experience this year.

**CLEAR CREEK UPDATE: We contacted Clear Creek today and arranged to have our kids be able to go next year. We will have one night that is for the current 5th grade next year, and one night that will be for this 5th grade (6th graders next year). We know there were many kids that were so disappointed and have looked forward to this experience. So for those of you that already donated and paid for Clear Creek you have two options:

  1. You can leave the money in the account at the district and we will mark your student as paid!
  2. You can contact the front office (Tina Lewis) to process a refund check. Processing the refund checks will take some time, so please be patient. :)

The new dates for next year’s Clear Creek will be May 10th & 11th.

WHAT WE'RE LEARNING IN CLASS

Math: We started multiplying and dividing fractions this week. We've learned how to multiply whole numbers by fractions using models. We've also learned how to write the whole number as a fraction and then multiply the numerators and denominators.

Writing: This week in writing, we took a RISE benchmark test to practice informative writing for our end of year state testing. We will be taking the RISE Writing test the week of March 30th.

Literacy: The next couple of weeks we will be working on inferencing. An inference is a guess based on evidence and schema (background knowledge).

In 5th grade, we focus heavily on text evidence to answer comprehension questions, as well as to include in our writing. We are using the "formula" ICE a Quote to answer literal and inferential questions. I stands for Introduce (credit the author/text), C stands for Copy (copy a sentence from the text using quotation marks), and E stands for Explain (explain the evidence).

Here is an example of a question and answer using ICE a Quote.

  • Question: What does Thomas Paine believe about independence?
  • Answer: Thomas Paine states, "I consider independence as America's natural right and interest." He feels that America should be granted freedom because it is morally wrong to not have it.

Science: For the next two weeks, we are switching for science again. Mrs. Hamilton is teaching our Magnet unit. During this unit, students will be learning about Earth's magnetic field and the basic properties of how magnets work. They will show their understanding by describing how the Northern Lights are formed, making a magnetic door, and creating models.

Please stay healthy and safe this weekend! - Jackie

We earned our class party! The kids chose to have treats and play outside. I was dying over their chalk reminders to wash hands 😂

I love these kids so much! ❤️
