April 20th - 24th

SPECIAL ANNOUNCEMENT FROM MRS. COOPER (in case you missed it)

Some sad news: I will not be returning to Forbes next year. My husband was given a job offer in Arizona, and we will be moving down there before the start of next school year. This was an incredibly difficult decision and I have tears in my eyes while writing this, as I love teaching at Forbes so much - working with your sweet kids everyday brings me so much joy and fulfillment. It's hard to express how I feel in writing, but all of you had made a lasting impact on me. Thank you for trusting me teach your children. Teaching is so much more to me than a job - I love the connections and relationships that I have formed with the kids, I love how we learn together, I love teaming up with the learning community to give the best learning environment possible, I love helping kids see and reach their potential, I love that together we accomplish hard things, and most of all, I love just playing and talking with the kids. Even though I will be in Arizona, I would love to stay in contact. I will also be up next year to say hi to the kids. Thank you for making my last year at Forbes such an incredible year and for all of the incredible support you have given me. I hope this year for your child has been memorable, meaningful, and a positive experience. I love you all.

Love, Mrs. Cooper

ANNOUNCEMENTS

  • Please fill out this survey on Alpine School District distance learning updates and your child's well-being HERE.
  • We are starting a mandatory Monday Morning Meeting this Monday, April 20th!
        • How this will look:
            • Every Monday at 11 AM, I will be holding a morning meeting with my class via Zoom.
                • Please make sure you download Zoom, you can do that HERE. Students can also do it when they click on the link to join their first meeting. Students will need to put in a meeting ID and password that I put on Google Classroom every week by clicking the link on Google Classroom.
            • I will use this time to go over the week's assignments, answer questions, and say hi to the kids! The remaining time, I will leave for the kids to chat and catch up with each other.
  • Please have students check their school email daily.
  • On Google Classroom, all assignments for the week will be under Week 5 - April 20th - 24th. There will be a weekly checklist to help you and your students to keep track of assignments for each day.
        • Last week we added a Class Check-In. This will help us know who is getting on Google Classroom everyday, as well as help us see how our student's our doing! Students can access this here or on Google Classroom. They need to fill it out daily (Monday - Friday). I had about half the class get on this past week, and it was great! If everyone could fill it out when they log on, that would be so helpful.
  • I love getting to interact with students on Google Meet - we are now going to do Zoom for the study sessions! Our session times can be found on Google Classroom. Please help students get on Zoom on time and make sure they have paper and pencil. After the sessions, students are welcome to stay on and chat with their friends :)
  • Mrs. Chavez is doing a virtual library for 5th grade every Tuesday at 10:00! Join by clicking HERE.

WHAT WE'RE LEARNING THIS WEEK

Next week's schedule can be found HERE.

**Special Note about Grading: Participation is a HUGE part of students' grades during virtual learning. Those students who are actively participating online and completing their assignments will receive high scores. While we still want students to do their very best, we recognize the many challenges of distance learning - which is why we are putting more emphasis on participation and completion of assignments, rather than test scores.

Literacy: Students are learning how compare and contrast two main ideas of multiple texts, primarily informational.

Math: We decided to extend our Fraction Multiplication and Division unit to give students more time to understand the concepts we taught. Below are a few videos that teach YOU each method so you can support your kids :) Students can also watch these videos.

Social Studies: We are continuing our Westward Expansion unit! We have been focusing on Lewis and Clark and the Louisiana Purchase, as well as treaties with Native Americans. This week we have been making a "scrapbook" via Google Slides - it is due by Friday.

Thanks again for all you are doing to help! Have a great weekend!

Love, Mrs. Cooper
