#15 This Week in 5th Grade

We had SUCH a fun week this week working on our Gingerbread House project. I've never had so many kids choose to stay in at recess because they were having so much fun (while learning)! HUGE shoutout to Stacey Hansen for making a ton of frosting for our gingerbread houses, and Teresa Phillips for manning our "store", as well as for all of their extra help.

WHAT WE'RE LEARNING IN CLASS

Math: For our gingerbread house project, the class was given a $5.00 budget to buy supplies from our "store" to build their house. They had to use multiplication, addition, and subtraction to figure our how much the desired number of items cost, the total cost, and their change.

Literacy (Reading & Comprehension): We've been working on inferencing. An inference is a guess, conclusion, or prediction based on evidence and background knowledge. We made inferences looking at pictures and after reading paragraphs.

Writing: This past week we wrote a key word summary on the history of gingerbread houses.

Science: This past week we did a fun project that combined literacy, math, and science. We used the engineering process to design and build gingerbread houses. We learned about electric light circuits, and added an electric light to our gingerbread houses. We used conductor tape, batteries, and mini lights to create circuits.

6 C's

In Alpine School District this year, we are focusing heavily on what we call the 6 C's: Collaboration, Citizenship, Character, Compassion, Communication, and Creativity. Read below to see how we used these this week.

Collaboration: Students worked together in collaborative partnerships to plan and build gingerbread houses that had to include a light. They designed the house and circuit together and executed their plan. Everyone needed to participate and contribute to this project. Students listened to each other and respected each other’s ideas.

Communication: Students worked with a group and were expected to communicate throughout the project. They expressed their ideas verbally. They will be presenting their projects to other classes on Monday.

Critical Thinking: Students will use critical thinking when researching and designing their circuits for their lights. They will use their knowledge about circuits and expand that knowledge when building their final product. They will ask questions and find the answers during the research part of the project.

Creativity: Students were creative in their designs and final product. They created any design for their gingerbread house and were creative in making their lights work in their houses. They had to revise their designs several times and listened to other’s ideas when building their houses and circuits.
