Health and Social Care

Health and Social Care is an outstanding department that has a positive and safe learning environment. The subject is designed for students to recognise and enhance skills, knowledge and understanding of the health, social care and early early years’ sectors including the settings, job roles, principles and values involved. Health and Social Care is assessed by both exam and coursework. The department is taught by one full time fully qualified Health and Social Care teacher and one Pe teacher.  The department has grown from strength to strength, in both popularity and success.


This subject is useful for anyone who wishes to work in the health and social care or early years sectors. Students are given the opportunities to develop applied knowledge in many areas for example; life stages, PIES, life events, conditions, barriers and obstacles an individual may encounter;life choices determined by individuals.


Students learn a variety of topics based around health, social care and early years settings e.g. communication, diet and nutrition, development through the life stages, pregnancy and childbirth which all prepare students for further training, higher education and moving into employment within the health and social care and early years sectors.

Career opportunities could lead to: care workers, dietician, medical secretary, physiotherapists, teacher, nurse, midwife, nursery nurse, paramedic, occupational therapist, activities organiser and social worker.


Key Stage 4

BTEC Level 1/2 First Tech Award in Health & Social Care

In KS4 students have the option to study for a BTEC Tech Award in Health & Social Care qualification.This course is for students who want to acquire sector specific knowledge and skills through vocational contexts.

The qualification consists of three components


This component explores different aspects of growth and development and the factors that can affect this across the life stages. Students will explore the different events that can impact individuals' physical,intellectual, emotional and social (PIES) development and how individuals cope with and are supported through changes by life  events. Students will be   internally assessed and work is moderated externally after each assessment window.


Component 2 explores health and social care services and how they meet the needs of the service usedStudents will understand the different types of social care services and barriers to accessing them and understand the skills, attributes and values required to give care. This unit is also internally assessed and work is moderated externally after each assessment window.


Component 3 students will explore the factors that affect health and wellbeing, learning about physiological and lifestyle indicators, and person-centred approaches to make recommendations to improve an individual’s health and wellbeing.  This external component builds on knowledge and understanding acquired and developed in Components 1 and 2, and includes synoptic assessment.Students will apply their knowledge and understanding of human lifespan development and life events, sources and types of support, health and social care services, the skills, attributes and values that contribute to care and the barriers and personal obstacles to accessing services.

 An exam worth 60 marks will be completed under supervised conditions.
