Curriculum Drivers

The Barton Hill Curriculum

Our curriculum drives progress through establishing a rigorous knowledge base and a life-long love of learning.  The curriculum at Barton Hill Primary Academy is grounded in the strongest available evidence about how pupils learn and retain knowledge in the long term – focusing in particular on research from cognitive science.

We are committed to providing significant opportunities for pupils to master core skills in Reading, Writing and Mathematics from an early age. Our curriculum is drawn from the Early Years Foundation Stage and the National Curriculum. In addition we use high quality programmes such as Read Write Inc, Ark English Mastery and the Ark Mathematics Mastery to ensure children are successful in gaining key literacy and mathematics skills.

We are extremely fortunate to have specialist teachers for Music and Modern Foreign Languages. They deliver a curriculum in their subject areas  which builds and extends on the core expectation outlined in the National Curriculum.  This includes all children having the opportunity to learn French and Spanish in their language lessons and learning to play a range of instruments in music.

History, Geography and Science are taught using Ark Curriculum+. The projects are designed to cover the National Curriculum and provide key knowledge, skills for each year group across the whole year.

Art and Design and Design Technology are taught discretely in each term. Where appropriate, the learning in DT is linked to the foundation project being studied through Ark Curriculum+ and in Art and Design, the children develop a range of Art skills and study a range of artists.

We follow the JIGSAW scheme of work as the basis for our RSHE teaching, supplemented with work from the Anti Bullying Alliance, Safer Schools team and NSPCC. We teach RE using the Discovery RE program of study. Throughout their school career, children study Christianity, Buddhism, Judaism, Hinduism and Islam.

All children participate in weekly physical activity through their PE lessons. In addition to the formal P.E. lesson, children have access to sports coaching every lunch time and during afterschool clubs.

Our Curriculum offers a broad range of memorable and engaging experiences. Educational visits use our locality as well as offering the opportunity to travel further afield. Barton Hill Primary Academy offers three residential trips across the school to enable children to develop their independent skills and manage themselves away from home whilst having lots of fun, trying out new activities and learning new skills.  Visitors with a range of experiences and expertise are invited into school to share their knowledge and skills and to inspire our children; whilst opportunities to work, play and make use of our school grounds all enable our children to benefit from the first hand experiences that make up our rich curriculum.
