At Barton Hill Academy, we strive to cultivate a love of mathematics in all of our children, ensuring an excitement and enthusiasm for the subject.
We aim to ensure all pupils:
become fluent in the fundamentals of mathematics, including through varied and frequent practice with increasingly complex problems over time, so that pupils develop conceptual understanding and the ability to recall and apply knowledge rapidly and accurately
reason mathematically by following a line of enquiry, conjecturing relationships and generalisations, and developing an argument, justification or proof using mathematical language
can solve problems by applying their mathematics to a variety of routine and non-routine problems with increasing sophistication, including breaking down problems into a series of simpler steps and persevering in seeking solutions
This, we believe, will equip our children with tools for life as well as for later study and work.
Daily maths lessons are taught using the Ark Mathematics Mastery. We develop children’s learning across all strands of maths through a variety of approaches. We provide children with concrete manipulatives to secure their understanding of place value. As they develop as mathematicians, they are expected to use both pictorial and written methods as outlined in our whole school calculation policy. To help children succeed in maths, there is a strong focus on developing maths fluency and arithmetic skills through our daily Mathematics Meetings as well as a half termly focus on Key Instant Recall Facts (KIRFs)
