Safeguarding is the responsibility of all adults and especially those working or volunteering with children.

Barton Hill Academy, is the first primary school in the country to be awarded the Platinum level for the Incyte International Excellence in Safeguarding Award. The award was presented by Incyte’s Managing Director, Malcolm Greenhalgh.

'To gain The Platinum Award, the academy gained Grade 1 in each of the twenty three categories of the award and demonstrated innovative practice that goes above and beyond that which is found normally. Barton Hill Academy demonstrated that this work makes a positive difference to the people in their care.'

The Barton Hill aims to help protect the children in its care by working consistently and appropriately with all agencies to reduce risk and promote the welfare of children. All professionals work within the same safeguarding procedures. When concerned about the welfare of a child, staff members will always act in the interest of the child.

Child protection is one very important aspect of safeguarding. It refers to the activity which is undertaken to protect children who are suffering, or at risk of suffering, significant harm. Safeguarding, in addition to child protection, encompasses issues such as pupil health and safety, bullying/cyber-bullying, appropriate medical provision, drugs and substance misuse.

Torbay Education Safeguarding Service works in partnership with schools to promote the welfare of children and young people, and to ensure they are safe from harm.

As part of their work they will receive information from partner agencies, such as the police and social care. If it is considered in the interest of the child or young person, this information will be shared with the school. If information is shared, this will be in accordance with the key principles of the Data Protection Act and be on a need to know basis, and will only occur to help schools protect and promote the welfare of your son or daughter.

When there is any sharing of information, schools should discuss this with you to enable a partnership approach to meeting the needs of your son or daughter.

Prevent

Since 1st July 2015 there has been a duty on schools to have 'due regard to the need to prevent people from being drawn into terrorism'. This is called Prevent duty. You can view the Prevent Duty advice for Schools by downloading the document below.

All staff at Barton Hill Academy have been trained using the Workshop to Raise Awareness of Prevent (WRAP)
