Barton Hill Academy is an Inclusion Quality Mark (IQM) Flagship Status School for its continual work in improving the opportunities for its community and has recently secured the title of IQM National Inclusion Champion Award school

The award of Flagship Status means our inclusive provision for Special Educational Needs (SEN) has been recognised as being the best academic standards and practice seen across the country. You can read more about our inclusive practice here

Working alongside our inclusive mainstream classes we have three enhanced provisions to provide additional support to our pupils with SEN.

Rockpool Class

Rockpool class is an enhanced provision that runs alongside the EYFS and KS1 classes for children either with Autism Spectrum Condition (ASC) or are on the pathway to a diagnosis of ASC. Children in Rockpool class follow an adapted EYFS/National curriculum with personalised interventions to meet the needs of pupils who access the provision.

Pathways are identified for pupils to either reintegrate into mainstream classes or to more specialist provisions with the support of professionals and in partnership with parents and carers.

Oysters Class

Oysters class is an Enhanced Speech and Language Provision at Barton Hill Academy. It is a small class of 10 children (aged 4-8) from South Devon and Torbay, who receive intensive speech and language therapy and specialist teaching to help overcome their severe communication difficulties.

All admissions are administered through the Special Education Team at the Local Authority. Children attending the Unit have an Education Health Care Plan specifying their speech and language difficulties.

The aim of the Enhanced Speech and Language Provision is to ensure that children acquire good language skills so that they can successfully reintegrate into their local mainstream schools.

The children integrate successfully with the children at Barton Hill Academy during their time here and have access to playgrounds, assemblies, shows and educational visits to provide a rich and diverse learning experience.

If you would like any further information please contact the main school office on 01803 327161 or email: contactus@bartonhillacademy.org

Ocean Class

Ocean class is a provision that supports our children in KS2 who have significant SEMH and other SEND needs that prevent them from accessing a mainstream classroom and are at risk of exclusion.

The provision identifies a pathway for these children, whether to support back into mainstream class or support application to alternative provisions as well as providing support, advice and resources to teachers and families for other children accessing mainstream class with SEMH and other SEND needs.

Specialist teacher and support staff in the provision provide an adapted curriculum to meet the individual needs of the children and work with other professionals to support children's progress, identify needs and complete RSA where necessary.

Curriculum Plans & Letters

Work at Home

Reading at home is one of the most important ways you can support your child’s education. Children across the three provisions will have personalised reading targets and we thank you in advance for your help with supporting them. Children will also have a library book to read for pleasure. Please enjoy sharing this book with your child each night with you at home.

Communication

We are always happy to talk to you and support or help where needed. If you need to talk to us, please make an appointment at the school office or see us after school. Alternatively you can message us on Seesaw. If you do have any concerns, your first point of contact should be the class teachers who know your child best. Mrs Farrell, SENDCo & Assistant Headteacher, is also available if needed.

Seesaw & Twitter

We will share all the amazing learning your child has done on Seesaw, keep an eye on your child’s journal and why not make a comment, the children love receiving comments from home. You can also visit the inclusion Twitter page to see the exciting things we are doing.
