Modern Studies helps to develop your knowledge and understanding of social, political and economic issues. You will learn about the political and social issues that affect us in Scotland, the UK and internationally. You will also find out some of the ways societies deal with conflict, and learn about human rights and responsibilities. The course has three areas of study:
Democracy in Scotland the United Kingdom, Social Issues in the United Kingdom and International Issues
The course assessment has three components totalling 110 marks:
Component 1: question paper 1 – worth 52 marks (consisting of 3 sections, two worth 20 marks and one worth 12 marks)
Component 2: question paper 2 – worth 28 marks
Component 3: assignment – worth 30 marks.
For the assignment component, you will choose any modern studies topic or issue that refers to a contemporary political, social or international issue. There are two stages which will be assessed: research, and production of evidence.
S5 Entry:
Learners should have passed National 5 Modern Studies (A or B)
S6 Entry:
Learners should have passed National 5 Modern Studies (A or B) or if learners wish to 'crash' this subject they should be able to demonstrate ability to cope with Higher level work in similar subjects.
Advanced Higher Modern Studies (City Campus)
Learners may be suited to studying another Higher offered in Social Subjects or Personal Development (SCQF Level 6)
