Retail develops key employability skills including customer service and leadership through working in practical and simulated contexts. You will have the opportunity to work in the school coffee shop and other simulated work environments. The course also looks at the importance and background of the retail industry including careers, pathways and organisations that exist.
Units covered
The course is comprises of 4 units:
Working in Retail - You will understand the scope and duties of working in a retail job and the pathways it offers. There will be opportunities to work as part of a team, learn and work in our inhouse coffee shop to develop employability skills.
Satisfying Customer Needs - This unit investigates how to demonstrate positive customer care and sorting customer complaints in a retail environment. It involves also demonstrating and investigating how to increase retail sales of particular products.
Maintaining, Storing and Replenishing Stock - This area of study investigates how to move and monitor inventory levels in a retail environment. It also looks at the disposal of litter and waste, including the importance of recycling.
Planning and Implementing a Retail Event - This area of study involves running and planning retail events throughout the year. You’ll also be able to reflect on these events.
The course assessment is based on ongoing assessments throughout the year. There is no exam which means the course is graded pass or fail at National 5.
Suitable for those learners who wish to gain an understanding of the range of job opportunities provided by the retail industry and
the skills required.
Successfully completing the National 5: Skills for Work Retailing will allow you to progress to NPA Business & IT (Level 5/6).
