Field-Based Supervisors

For Designated Subject Credential (DSC) Candidates

In addition to support provided by an assigned mentor, candidates will also be working with field-based supervisors who will:

  • Provide meaningful feedback on the teaching practices a candidate is expected to acquire and demonstrate based on the Teacher Performance Expectations/California Standards for the Teaching Profession.
  • Collaborate with DSC candidates in response to the candidate’s needs and provide guidance, assistance, and information that leads the DSC candidates to effective professional practice. Assistance may include classroom management, assessment, planning, and defining short-term and long-term goals.
  • Conduct informal observations as required by DSC candidate’s program, including pre- and post-conferences
    • Collect baseline observation data to diagnose and determine candidate goals.
  • Conduct formal observations as required by DSC candidate’s program, including pre- and post-conferences
    • Collect follow-up observation data to evaluate and establish future goals.
  • Complete summative assessment document determining candidate competency as required by DSC candidate’s program*.
  • Assist the DSC candidates in formative and summative assessment based on the Teacher Performance Expectations and/or California Standards for the Teaching Profession, state adopted Career Technical Education Model Curriculum Standards and/or Industry Standards that support the candidate’s demonstration of CTE/Adult Education standards.

Programs provide ongoing professional development trainings to guide field supervisors in the roles and responsibilities of working with newly credentialed teachers using formative assessment. Field-based supervisors may be teachers or administrators who are not from the same bargaining unit as the candidate.

Unlike mentors, field-based supervisors are program evaluators and will conduct observations and provide evaluative data to determine candidate competency as required by the DSC CTE Program.
