Career Technical Education (CTE)

The Preliminary or Clear Designated Subjects Career Technical Education Credential (DSC CTE) authorizes the holder to teach in the subject(s) named on the credential in grades 12 and below and in classes organized primarily for adults, in career technical instruction (vocational) courses.

The DSC CTE Credential is a two-tiered credential:

  • An individual first qualifies for the initial credential called a "preliminary," based mainly on actual work experience in the industry sector. This preliminary credential is valid for three (3) years.
  • During the three years, additional requirements must be completed to earn the final credential called a "clear." A clear credential is valid for five (5) years and is renewable online through the Commission on Teacher Credentialing's (CTC) website.

There are 15 broad CTE subject areas (called "industry sectors") that can be listed on a credential. For additional informaiton on CTE industry sectors, refer to the CTC's DSC Career Technical Education Informational Leaflet and to the Educator Support and Effectiveness website.
