Are you 18+ ? Don't forget to vote in the upcoming Local Elections!
Are you 18+ ? Don't forget to vote in the upcoming Local Elections!
On Thursday 4th May, Local Elections will be held in Sheffield. This is to elect new Councillors to Sheffield City Council. There are also many other local elections taking place across the country, so no matter where you live, have a look below to see what election may be taking place in your area.
If you are aged 18 or over and registered to vote, we strongly encourage you to do so.
One of the key values that The Sheffield College encourages among students is ‘Active Citizenship’ both within and outside of the College. Voting in elections is a key way to be an active citizen and have your say in democratic processes that will affect you. Democracy - the system where everyday people have a say in who is representing them - is a key pillar of our society, and is a right that people have fought for.
There are plenty of resources available to support you in making an informed decision of who to vote for, and we have linked to some of these below. Take 5 minutes to have a look at who is running in your area and some of the key topics candidates are focusing on.
There is a new law being introduced for the 2023 Local Elections, whereby voters will need an accepted form of photo ID to vote. Please check to see if you have one of these, and make sure you take it with you to vote. The accepted photo IDs can be found here
If you do not have an accepted form of ID, the National Union of Students is providing FREE CitizenCards that can be used as identification. You can apply for one of these by clicking the button below and make sure to use the code NUS at the checkout.
So many parts of your life - your education, work, access to services, and future opportunities can be affected by election results, so it is in your best interest to vote!
If you have any questions, please contact studentsunion@sheffcol.ac.uk or your local council.
