A Message on Autism Awareness Month from Musical Theatre Student, Erin!
A Message on Autism Awareness Month from Musical Theatre Student, Erin!
This is me :)
"Hello everyone, I'm Erin an autistic 18 year old and I am on the musical theatre course here at The Sheffield College (and a big musical theatre fan too)."
"I thought I would tell you a bit more about me, so I've already mentioned that I am a musical theatre fan, but I have many special interests including Disney, turtles, sharks and many more!"
"I thought I would start with what Autism awareness month is and what it is like to be autistic. Autism awareness is vital for people like me and many others, as many people think autism is a scale as in your high functioning autistic or low functioning autistic but that's quite the opposite. Every autistic person is different."
"For me as an Autistic person I am very hypersensitive to loud sounds, fluorescent lights and different types of fabric. You may or may not know but autism is more often spotted in men and boys rather than women, most women are diagnosed later in life."
Most people think that the Autism spectrum looks like this...
But it actually looks like this!
"I also wanted to add a bit about things you can watch and read. I really encourage you to look for autism awareness social media platforms like @adelaidesaywell, @dyslexiadayna and @iinsidemyhead. They are amazing so please go give them a follow."
"If you would like to follow me my instagram is @inaworldoferin I also write a blog called 'Only Human' which you can find here. If you would like to read some of my posts it would mean the world."
Massive 'Thank You' for filling out the Student Surveys
Student Voice feedback is very important to the College and one of the large-scale ways we collect this feedback is through the Student Voice Surveys that run twice a year. Thank you so much to everyone who has taken part this year and shared their views on their experiences in College.
This feedback is presented to the highest level in College, including the College Executive Team and Board of Governors, and is a key part of quality improvement for the College. Your voices are heard and contribute to improvements and planning for student support, student experience, teaching and learning and campus facilities. Not only does your feedback help with enhancing the student experience it also enables us to really celebrate how good The Sheffield College is. Taking part in these surveys really helps shape your college experience and campuses.
This year we have had in total nearly 10,000 student survey responses! This includes nearly 80% of students taking part in the term one induction survey and 83% taking part in the term two on programme survey.
Consistently students share what an inclusive and welcoming place the College is with thousands of students agreeing they feel they are treated with fairness and respect by the College (97% in term one and 94% in term two) and agreeing the College is a welcoming place for people from all backgrounds (98% in term one and 97% in term two).
You will also have the opportunity during May to contribute to the College's reassessment for the Leaders in Diversity award - look out for that student survey invite coming soon!
In the term two on programme survey we also asked you to share your ideas on how we can improve or change how student feedback is shared, listened to and acted upon, and how we can let you all know about the next steps following student feedback. The Student Participation Team will be reviewing all of your great ideas this term so we can try to incorporate it into next year's student voice activities in College.

However, problems and worries often happen outside of college times. This is why the Sheffield College has launched the Student Assistance Programme. This is an external agency that offers a 24/7 helpline of support. All phone calls are answered by trained Councillors who are able to guide, support and signpost. The leaflet also has the number included.
