Periodic Table of Google Chrome Apps, Chrome Extensions and Google Add-Ons

What is the difference between Chrome Apps, Chrome Extensions, and Google Add-Ons?

An App, or application, is similar to loading software from a CD or downloading it from the web. Google Chrome was designed to run applications. By installing the Apps in your Chrome browser, you are able to keep the most updated version of the app.

An extension provides more functionality to your browser and the web page you are viewing. It allows you to quickly do something with a page rather than having to open another application to complete that action. For example, you have been working on creating a lesson and have found several websites you would want to share with your students or another teacher. If you install the OneTab extension, you can click it and it puts all the links on one tab that you can share with others.

The Google Chrome Web Store allows you to shop for web apps and extensions. Add-ons are looked for inside the Google App you are using (ie Docs, Sheets, Forms). The terminology can be confusing and this article tries to explain the differences.

Click on any of the squares to go to the download page; some of the Add-Ons can be used in Docs, Sheets and Forms. If any of these interest you or you need help using any of these, please fill out the Integration Form here.
